Filament Type 1701

The purpose of this report is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater. 1701 is a rather short filamentous bacteria ranging in length from 10 to 100 µm, having rod- shaped cells (these cells appear like miniature weenies). These cells have sizes that vary (0.7-1.0X1.0-2.0 µm) in length and width. The trichome tends to be short and slightly curved. A sheath can be found surrounding the cell. 1701 is found primarily within the floc. 1701 is Gram negative and Neisser negative. Attached growth is always observed unless the filament is extending out of the floc.

Small dark granules are slightly apparent within each rod-shaped cells within the trichome.  These granules are PHB.

Filament type 1701 1000x (Brightfield, Sheath Stain)

The sheath that sorrounds the 1701 trichome is stained pink whereas the cells are colored purple.

Filament type 1701 1000x (Brightfield, Sheath Stain)

Sheath is stained a light pink color and the individual cells are stained purple.  Notice rod-shaped cells running diagonally from middle of photo toward top left.
